Reading the room before you read the label

Most sleepwear is sorted by shape. We sort ours by weight first, because the thing that wakes you at three in the morning is not the neckline.

A shape tells you very little

A pyjama set can be cotton jersey you would wear in July or brushed fleece you would wear in a house with the heating off. Same two pieces, same picture from the front, twenty degrees apart in how they sleep. That is the whole problem with shopping by category. You pick the shape you like, the weight arrives by accident, and you find out which one you got on the first cold night.

So we put weight first. Every piece here sits on one of four rungs, and the rung comes from what the specification says the fabric actually is. Jersey, modal and satin go to Light. Flannel and french terry go to Midweight. Thermal and waffle knits go to Warm. Plush, sherpa and fleece go to Warmest.

What a rung is and is not

A rung is a claim about cloth, not about you. We know what our pieces are made of. We do not know whether your bedroom faces north, whether the heating clicks off at eleven, or whether you are the person in the house who kicks the duvet off. Two people in the same room on the same rung will disagree, and both of them will be right.

That is why the picker asks three questions instead of one. The room sets a starting rung, how you sleep moves it a step either way, and who it is for narrows the shelf. It is a starting point. Nothing more honest is available to us from here.

Start from the room, then pick the shape

The order matters. Choose the rung, then choose between a gown, a set, a robe or a one piece within it. Done that way the shape is a preference and the weight is a decision. Done the other way round the weight is a lottery.
